    NATIONAL CITIZEN SERVICE (NCS)

Do you know of any 16 or 17 year olds who would like a life changing opprtuinty in summer 2013?

NCS helps young people build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and meeting new friends. NCS gives thousands of young people the chance to:

    • Meet other people from all backgrounds and tackle outdoor challenges on an exciting residential week away from home.

    • Join with businesses and social leaders to learn new skills for work and life, and to discover more about their area.

    • Make their mark by developing and delivering local volunteering projects that matter to them.

    When?

NCS takes place over several weeks (out of school time) in spring, summer or autumn. A breakdown of the weeks is shown below.

    What?

    Week 1

Four nights spent in the great outdoors (in Staffordshire or Cumbria) taking part in exciting activities such as abseiling, caving, camping, overnight expeditions, high ropes and raft building.

    Week 2

Four nights will be spent in University of Derby Halls of Residence. Day time activities include such as film making, project management and fundraising. In the evening there are trips to roller skating, laser questing or watching the latest film at the cinema.

    Week 3

At a local base to home, the team will meet to discuss, plan and fundraise for a unique social action project. This will be a cause or need that the team feel passionate about and could help to improve the lives of others within the community, such as, organising a sleep-out, to raise awareness of homelessness.

    Week 4

By now you will have all the materials and resources you need and be ready to go out into the community to deliver your social action project.

    Graduation

Once you have completed the programme you will be invited to a graduation ceremony. Here you will share and celebrate all your achievements and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

    Cost?

£30 (special discount for registering by 6th May - the cost is £40 after 6th May) which includes all meals, transport and equipment needed.

(Bursaries are available - please ask us)

A recent CBI Survey on Education and Skills  said

"Many young people are still leaving school and college with serious shortfalls in their employability skills.  Over half of employers (55%) experience weaknesses in school leavers' self-management skills and two thirds (69%) believe they have inadequate business and customer awareness."

A group of teachers for the Chesterfield area would like to talk to a few employers to see how they can help their students more effectively in schools. To help this we are holding a Breakfast meeting on 19th March 2013 at 8am at the Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce offices in Chesterfield and would like employers with ideas to come along and join us. If you would like to be involved, please email Kaye on kaye.twomloww@debp.org.
